Nice plot and scenery, and great steampunk atmosphere, including a nice historical montage by way of exposition. I'd love to see a Haluz3 someday.Īutomaton is a very cool steampunk game that follows the adventures of a telekinetic automaton and his creator. Haluz is a worthy newcomer to the burgeoning Samorost-style genre, and deserves support.

(Unfortunately, there is no game and soundtrack CD package.) I bought the full bundle, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

The full game can be downloaded for offline play with or without the soundtrack, and the soundtrack is also available for purchase as a CD. Taking another page from Samorost, Haluz Games has adopted Amanita's Samorost 2 distribution model - the first few levels of Haluz2 are available to play online for free, with the remaining levels and soundtrack available to purchase. Other influences the creator has named include Shift and Wogger.

Fans of Samorost will feel right at home among its photorealistic mossy, mushroomy landscapes (drawn from photos of sites in the Carpathian mountains), drippy caves, growing flowers and assortment of birds, bugs, and woodland creatures. Samorost's influence is even more apparent in this game, which is a little less cartoony and more magical than its predecessor. Haluz Games, the development studio of Tomas K., who brought us the delightful Samorost-inspired Haluz (see my original post on Haluz here), is back with a nicely redone site and a splendid sequel: Haluz2. Now that those are out of the way, some games that are actually new: Play with the things on the shelves to trigger strange effects. The Pantry is not a game, but an interactive toy.

Despite the un-magical premise, Amanita's signature style and flair make it worthwhile. Rocketman VC is a very short game promotional game made for Nike, in which pair of scientists work to power up a pair of basketball shoes. It's a lovely little game, with all the ethereal beauty and whimsy of the Samorost series. The Quest for the Rest is a promotional game created for the band The Polyphonic Spree, in which members of the band go questing for their missing fellows. I realize I haven't actually presented any of Amanita's non-Samorost games here before, so in case you've missed them, you'll want to check these out: It's due in late 2008, and you can hang out at the new Machinarium forum for a dose of hype to hold you over until then. First of all, there is a new project from Samorost creator Amanita Design: it's not Samorost 3, but a new game, called Machinarium. I found it a thrilling change of pace.Things are looking good. The Swindle - a very intense stealth platformer roguelite that didn't get the best reception. Stranger of Sword City - maybe stretching this generation a bit, but it's another great dungeon crawl RPG with excellent mechanics and amazing art. Bleed was fun, but the sequel blows it away. Rough around the edges as it's very indie, but worth playing.īleed 2 - a kickass little run and gunner. Plays kind of like Doom with a bit of Arx or Underworld blended in. Hedon - a pretty decent shooter built in GZDoom. The devs went on to create They Are Billions, which is apparently a press and streamer darling. It's a little hard to pigeonhole as it blends inspiration from a number of games. Lords of Xulima - another great and pretty challenging old-school RPG that was largely ignored, and another Kickstarter success for me. I backed this on Kickstarter and I'm thrilled with the result. The press completely ignored it on release, and the company (led by Descent veterans) disbanded due to poor sales. This is THE successor to Descent - enough said. Overload - one of the recent old-school shooters that didn't get any attention. It's not perfect, and it overstays its welcome a bit if you go for the true ending, but it's one of the best RPGs I've played in the past year. A massive, crunchy dungeon crawler with an unexpectedly gripping and very dark story (content warning on this one). Labyrinth of Refrain - this one really took me by surprise. Taking "sleeper" to mean games that didn't get a lot of attention.
